I'm giving a Final Fantasy walkthrough for that long journey.

After meeting several members of the group known as Avalanche,Cloud joins their effort to bomb Shinra's Mako Reactor No. 1. The guards at the station are killed easily. Check the guards for potions. Before you can reach the stairs, 2 MP's initiate combat. Use your regular attack for the MP's. It only takes one hit for each. After fighting, follow the rest of the team up the stairs then follow Biggs into the reactor. To get past the doors, you need to speak to Biggs and Jessie. After getting through the doors, go to the room to the right. Go to the shiny box and open it. You get a Phoenix Down. Then follow Jessie into the elevator and do what she asks. Follow Jessie out of the elevator, and go where she goes. She shows you how to use ladders. Pick up the potion in front of her, then continue deeper into the reactor. (Keep your eyes open for stuff like potions, and materia.) When you get into a fight with a robot, use lightning. After going a little further, you encouter tougher enemies, and a chance to save
your game. Save it, the continue down the kind of long path. Pick up the thing in front of you on the path. It's materia. But you can't use it yet. When you appraoch the reactor, Barret makes Cloud set the bomb on the reactor. Boss Fight: Guard Scorpian. This is a kind of easy fight, just don't attack when its tail's up! Have Cloud do Bolt, and Barret his normal attack. After the battle, equip Barret with the Assault Gun the scorpian leaves behind. Also, save your game. Go back up to where Jessie was, and help her get her leg unstuck. Follow Jessie into the elevator, but when you get in, she won't be there. Pull down ONCE on the lever on the wall. Run out to find Jessie and Biggs. You need them to open the doors again. Hurry out of the reactor to where Wedge is, then sit back and relax. Helping Jessie and running out in time is Automatic. Don't relax too long, that was only the 1st mission! The team escapes the reactor just in time, and prepare to return to their hideout. But first, Barret commands the team to split up and meet at the Sector 8 Station. Follow Barret off-screen. You approach a Flower Girl and she asks you (or you ask her) to buy a flower. Buy the flower. She tries to get information about the explosion. Take some time to talk to her. After the little chat, follow her into the courtyard. There's really nothing to do here. You can talk to a few people and fight some Guard Hounds. But don't forget to pick up the potion on your way continuing south. As Cloud approaches the street, guards come after him. You hae 2 options. You can fight, or you can run. If you choose to fight, the guards keep coming back. Their not that tough though.
